2023 ISF’s Girls’ Tournament

An exciting competition and opportunity for female athletes to showcase their skills and abilities

ISF Sports Ground, Phnom Penh – On the weekend following International Women’s Day, ISF Cambodia (ISF) hosted an incredible event – the annual Girls’ Tournament. This tournament brings together 468 passionate female athletes from across Cambodia to the ISF Sports Ground, providing them with an opportunity to show strength, talent and celebrate their love of the game.

Since its founding in 2006, ISF has been a trailblazer for gender equality and female inclusion in sports. In Cambodia, opportunities to participate in organized sports are often limited due to socio-economic barriers, which are further exacerbated by gender stereotypes. This has left many marginalised girls and women, particularly those living in poverty, without access to sports. In order to foster equity and inclusion, ISF is proud to host its thirteenth Girls’ Tournament – welcoming female athletes from eight provinces across the country. This tournament will give young women the opportunity to pursue their sporting dreams and challenge the gender-based barriers that have prevented them from doing so.

Recognising some teams travel upwards of eight hours each way to attend ISF’s Annual Girls’ Tournament, ISF Country Manager Vicheka Chourp explains: “In Cambodia, girls are too often excluded from sports, which are often dominated by males. Our research in local communities, however, shows that there is a great deal of enthusiasm and interest from girls to play football. Unfortunately, poverty, domestic expectations, cultural traditions, and stereotypes often prevent girls from participating. That’s why we created this annual Girls’ Tournament – to help increase girls’ access to competitive matches.”
