Leng Rotha’s Story

Our Football Programme inspires one young athlete to shatter the stereotypes surrounding disabled athletes
Regardless of gender, race, or ability, ISF Cambodia advocates for and strives to provide opportunities for all marginalised children. Our All-Ability Football Programme is a one-of-a-kind programme that paves the way for disabled children who are often excluded from society. For one 15-year old boy, participating in our programme has sparked a dream and a mission – to prove to the world that disabled players can play and coach professional-level sports.
Leng Rotha* was born with hearing impairments. Passionate for sports at an early age, he didn’t have the opportunity or resources to attend regular football training until he joined ISF’s Football Programme in 2018. With the support of our experienced coaches, he’s since had multiple opportunities to compete in both leagues and tournaments across Cambodia; and has even had the opportunity to travel to and compete in Japan!
In Cambodia, it’s a widely held belief that disabled people are unfit to play team sports.
Rotha does admit that there are some challenges. Signing specific techniques and rules can sometimes be difficult, but with his family and coaches’ support, he always finds a way to communicate with his team.
To Rotha, football is more than just a game. The ability to play has not only helped to develop his confidence, but he’s learned important skills like goal setting, teamwork, communication, and competition. Participating in ISF Cambodia’s Football Programme has led Rotha to a happier and healthier life, and he’s proud that he can show other disabled children that playing football can be accessible to all.
