Late last year our country manager Kate was told about a simple process that was being used in the slums of the Philippines to provide light to community housing during the day. It is a combination of water and ammonia mixed together in a clear bottle. The mixture, exposed to sunlight radiates a bright light.

ISF did a pilot last month at the Steng Meanchey community. Two of the fathers of children who attend ISF have been taught the skills required to prepare the bottles and install the bottles in the roof of houses. It is amazing how much light is produced by installing one of the bottles in the roof of a house. We’re told the life of the bottle is 6 years.

Thanks to a donation from Diversey, we received 750 bleach tablets to enable us to undertake the project.

Thanks to sponsorship from Pepsi, the two fathers will be employed to install the bottles into 1,000 of the homes in the communities we work with in Steng Meanchey and Chbar Ampov.
