Message from Peter Slater, the Founder and Ex-Chairman

Peter Slater, ISF Founder and Ex-Chairman

You will find all you need to know about the ISF, it’s programmes, it’s activities as well as many wonderful stories about how the charity fundamentally changes the lives of so many young people in Cambodia from one of poverty and full of despair to one of hope and opportunity elsewhere on this website.

As the founder of the ISF, with a small group of close friends, back in 2006 I would like to give you my insights into why we created the ISF and the philosophy that has driven our passion to make a difference. I believe it is this philosophy that has made the ISF so successful and will ensure it will be both successful and sustainable for many many more years to come.

There are four core principles at the heart of the philosophy behind the ISF. Two are more well known and public being covered across our website, Instagram, Facebook and other media. The second two are well understood within the ISF itself but may not be so well known outside the organisation. However, all four are equally important.

The “Starfish” philosophy.

It’s all in the name. The “starfish” story about the little girl on the beach is covered in other parts of this website. But fundamentally it is about making a difference one child at a time. No one individual, not even Bill Gates, can change the world alone, but every single one of us can make a difference and for the ISF that difference has always been about “making a difference one child at a time”. Back in 2006 when we first started there wasn’t a grand vision to help thousands of young people, there was a simple desire to make a difference to a few, in fact 15 young street children.  However, it was the passion of the early trustees and staff and all those who have joined the ISF subsequently that enabled the ISF to evolve to have a positive impact on over 8,500 young people and their communities.

Every child deserves a chance.

From the very beginning myself and everyone involved with the ISF have believed that every child, no matter where they come from, no matter who their parents are, no matter what gender, creed or colour, deserves a chance to have a decent education and the opportunity to reach for the skies to make their own individual dreams come true. This drives everyone at the ISF to do their very best, whatever their skills, to help all the young people supported by the charity.

Those are the first two, more formally recognised principles. The next two philosophical principles are definitely well understood within the ISF itself but maybe not be so well known outside the organisation. However, I believe these two additional philosophies have been equally important in our success to date and will be fundamental to the future sustainability of the ISF.

We are a family.

From the moment the idea of helping young people in Cambodia came into my head and my heart I wanted everyone who was involved to feel that they were part of a family, and that means EVERYONE. So we have always aimed to ensure that the children, the communities from which they come, our staff, our trustees and all our wonderful friends and supporters know that they are part a one large family. A family in which everyone can contribute in any way that is meaningful and appropriate. In our ISF family everyone supports each other, encourages each other, appreciates each other and does everything in their power to help each other using whatever abilities, talents, knowledge, skills and contacts they may have.

It must be fun for everyone.

“Making a difference to as many children as possible whilst having great fun with wonderful mates” is at the heart of what we do. This may sound glib but I fundamentally believe that everyone gives that little bit extra, is a little more committed, stays involved a little longer if they are having fun and enjoying themselves in whatever they are doing. So every ISF event, be it a fundraising dinner, the ISF schools Christmas party, the trustee meetings, the football tournaments, or the day to day delivery of our programmes, it is about everyone having fun… our friends and supporters, our trustees and staff, our students, our partners and the members of the communities we support. Everyone at the ISF is very serious, focused and professional about what they are driven to achieve but that doesn’t mean we can’t all have fun at the same time.

I believe it is all four of these principles that has made the ISF a very special and unique organisation. I retired as founding chairman of the ISF in 2017 but remain involved joining Christmas parties, visiting the schools, talking to the staff, meeting the students, joining the football tournaments, and the annual Angkor half marathon whenever I can. I remain immensely proud of everyone at the ISF and feel one of my greatest achievements was having a seamless handover to my successors on the board.  It was a true honour and privilege for me to have had the opportunity to lead the organisation in the early years but an even greater pleasure to watch the ISF go from strength to strength under the peerless leadership of Vicheka, the support of her enthusiastic and highly capable team and guidance from an engaged and experienced board of trustees.

I am now very happy to hold the wonderful title of “the old grandfather“ of the ISF family.
