The AIA-ISF Youth League builds friendships as well as fitness for Cambodia’s young players
Thirteen-year-old Lim Piseth* is currently a grade 7 student in state school in Phnom Penh’s Stung Meanchey district. Coming from a severely disadvantaged background, Piseth grew up with little opportunity to receive an education or to play competitive sport. That changed when he joined ISF’s education and football programmes. Now, Piseth is not only attending school but is also playing football in the AIA-ISF Youth League.
Initially, Piseth’s parents weren’t keen on him playing football, fearing that he’d skip school in favour of the game. However, to be eligible to compete in the league, regular school attendance is a must. Not only is football helping to keep young players in school but it is also enhancing their academic performance. Piseth reports that his concentration has greatly improved since he joined the league.
Piseth plays defence in ISF’s Teddy Bears U14 Boys’ Team and describes being passed the ball during the match as one of his favourite parts of the game as it makes him feel included and part of the team. Following the rules and working cooperatively during training and matches bring Piseth joy and confidence. He enjoys practicing the techniques he learns at training and working with his teammates to get it right. However, the highlight of league for Piseth, is the opportunity to build lasting friendships: “my best memories in football so far are the friendships with my teammates and the achievements we’ve worked together to get” he says.
In line with AIA’s commitment to help people live healthier, longer and better lives, the AIA-ISF Youth League is providing some of Cambodia’s most marginalised youth with opportunities to exercise regularly under the guidance of ISF’s qualified coaches and build physical fitness and strength. “Though my body hurts sometimes from playing a tough match, I feel physically stronger now compared to when I started a year and a half ago” explains Piseth. “I would like to encourage my friends and neighbours to start playing football because I want them to have a chance to improve themselves through football like I have” he adds. Piseth is one of almost 1,500 children that have enjoyed the benefits of the AIA-ISF Youth League 2018/19.
