Bicycles break down barriers to education in Cambodia
In Cambodia, distance is often a barrier to accessing education. Children, who often bear the brunt of many domestic chores, arrive late and tired at school after their long journey and inevitably fall behind. By providing bicycles to children who must travel long distances to school, we increase the likelihood of our students staying in school.
On Friday, 29 March 2019, we invited 60 students and their parents to attend an event at our education centre in Stung Meanchey where we provided information on safe cycling and bicycle maintenance. Bicycles and helmets were presented to 15 catch-up students and 45 state school students. All students must wear helmets while cycling.
We also took this opportunity to underline the importance and value of education, the benefits of schooling, and encouraged parents to motivate their children to go to school.
