Community Library

Community libraries provide disadvantaged families holistic support while promoting education

Prior to retiring in February of 2021, Soung Ry spent her days at home, surrounded by shelves of books and the excited chatter of children, wonderstruck with the contents of each page. With ISF’s support, Ry had converted a space of her home into a community library, open to the public.

As part of our Community Development Programme, ISF employs community members to open and run these learning resource centres in accessible locations throughout Phnom Penh. In exchange for a rental stipend, Ry was charged with maintaining the home library and tracking which books were borrowed and by whom.

A serendipitous match, Ry has always advocated for the importance of reading. She believes that it not only provides knowledge pertinent to daily life but broadens the way people think. Meant to foster an appreciation for education and ignite a passion for reading, Ry was an exemplary candidate to open a community library.

Expenses in the city were higher than her income, and like many disadvantaged families, Ry struggled to make ends meet. After enrolling her grandchild into ISF’s Education Programme, Ry learned about our holistic model and employment opportunities.

Because the pursuit of a better and brighter future requires a level of financial security and home support, ISF developed Community Libraries, a sustainable project that provides employment opportunities while promoting education in underprivileged neighbourhoods.

Having learned a world of new ideas from her own literary adventures, Ry continues to encourage her community to read and steps in to support the library when needed.

COVID-19 UPDATE:

In early July, ISF reopened our Community Libraries with limited services and hours. Until further notice, community members are required to borrow books for at-home use only.
