Addressing malnutrition gives our students a brighter future

Malnutrition is one of the greatest development challenges affecting children in Cambodia. One in three children under five suffers from malnutrition which not only leads to children’s growth being stunted physically but also reduces their intellect and ability to absorb knowledge.

Because, many different factors contribute to malnutrition, here at ISF, we take a multi-faceted approach to addressing the problem, working with our students, our communities and local partners. Part of this approach includes regular checkups for students with our school nurses.

When 12-year-old Keo* joined ISF’s Education Programe in 2017, our nurses were concerned about her weight and growth which was below the average healthy standard for her age. In addition, they found that she also suffered more from common illnesses such as colds, fevers, flus, dizziness and headaches than her healthier peers.

In addition to free healthcare, Keo also received two nutritious school meals per day, six days a week at ISF and her family received monthly food parcels. Our nurses kept an eye on her daily food intake in school and at home and gave her extra vitamins to build her strength up. After just six months, Keo showed great signs of improvement and today measures up to a healthy weight and height for her age.

“I am very happy that my health is getting better and better” says Keo. “I no longer have colds or headaches that cause me to be distracted in class – I can focus on my studies really well now and I always receive the top grades of my class” she adds
