24 August 2024, Phnom Penh – In a city where sports often cater to the physically fit, ISF Cambodia is breaking barriers and rewriting the narrative through its All Ability Event. Through the support of the FIFA Foundation Community Programme, ISF All Ability Event brought together 416 players of all abilities, of whom 109 are girls, for a day of inclusive games and football matches. Among them, 306 are young people with a disability or affected by HIV. Their day began with warm-up sessions that blended fun and learning through engaging activities, setting the stage for fun games and friendly matches. Our integrated events throughout the year provide opportunities for players of all abilities to play together – cultivating social inclusion and promoting equality.

One of the participants, Danny, shared her excitement, saying, “I am so excited and happy to be able to play basketball. Being in a wheelchair, I never imagined I could play. And to play with other kids who have similar disabilities—I’m happy to keep playing in the days to come.” 

Moon, an ISF coach, expressed how the event had inspired her: “This is my first day as an ISF football coach, and I am truly inspired by seeing everyone out on the field. In Cambodia, many people believe that sports are only for those who are physically fit, but we’re here to change that mindset. I’m proud to be part of this initiative.”

The All Ability Event was a powerful reminder of the inclusivity that sport can offer. It challenged perceptions, celebrated diversity, and marked a significant step towards ensuring that sports in Cambodia are accessible to everyone. As part of the FIFA Foundation funded Football for All Abilities project, ISF is committed to empowering youths with disabilities or HIV, using sports as a powerful tool for social change. Our experienced coaches offer tailored and inclusive activities to players who are blind or visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing, have intellectual disabilities, use a wheelchair, or are HIV positive. Through regular football training and events, ISF offers these players rare access to sport and nurtures their health and wellbeing, as well as the development of soft skills that are essential for their future employment and personal growth.
