Experiential Learning Trip: Phnom Sontuk
In February 2019, 30 of our state school students, enrolled in grade 7 and 8, enjoyed an experiential learning trip to Phnom Santok, a cultural and natural site located in Ko Koh village, Kampong Thom Province. Surrounded by mountains, the site is home to many ancient heritages including:
- Many Buddha statues, carved from great mountain rock including three big Buddha statues which are more than ten metres in length;
- Prasat Touch of pyramid shape, made of sandstone, has three stories and stretches three metres in height;
- Preah Bat Chann Tuk and other scultures, erected during the reign of Preah Ponhea Dharma Reacha (1474-1494)
We believe experiential learning trips to explore Khmer history and culture present students with new opportunities and settings where can consolidate the theory that they learn in class. Field trips like this are important to learning. On the trip, students are required to answer questions before seeing the site and again afterwards, demonstrating what knowledge they have acquired.
Taking the students out of the classroom and into a new environment allows them to work as a team with their classmates and make lifelong memories among peers, which we hope is a fun learning experience in itself and leads them to increased interest and engagement in their studies.
