Last month, we launched a pilot outreach project to empower coaches in rural areas to provide access to sport and learning to socially disadvantaged children in Cambodia. Coaches in three locations around Cambodia will receive training in using football for social impact using the methodologies developed by global leader in the field of sport for social impact training, Coaches Across Continents (CAC), which have been implemented on an ongoing basis with ISF over the past six years, with ISF now taking on the training of other Cambodian coaches in these methods and curricula.

Through three courses in Phnom Penh and outlying provinces, two of which have taken place already, 200 coaches and aspiring coaches from schools, community organisations and NGOs around the country will participate in an intensive five-day training module. This training will teach participants how to deliver social impact football training using games and activities; engaging children in locally relevant social issues such as gender equality, disability and social inclusion, drug and alcohol abuse, gambling, education and health. Participants will be trained to deliver a bespoke ISF/CAC social impact curriculum whilst developing children’s football skills, confidence, leadership, teamwork and decision-making skills in a fun and safe environment.

20 coaches from poor rural areas, lacking sports infrastructure and expertise, will be selected to receive ongoing support from ISF to enable them to deliver regular coaching to local girls and boys aged 11-14. Each coach will take on a group of approximately 25 socially disadvantaged children, and will receive regular support from ISF’s highly trained and experienced coaching staff throughout the year. The social impact topics that the coaches will teach will include:

3. Gambling
4. Education
5. Child rights
6. Disability and inclusion
7. HIV / AIDS
8. Gender equality
9. Problem solving
10. Teamwork
11. Leadership
12. Goal setting

Throughout the course of the proposed pilot project, we expect these 20 ISF – supported coaches to run 480 outreach sessions, reaching approximately 500 socially deprived children and three coach development courses focusing on social impact through football. It is anticipated that in addition to the 700 direct beneficiaries of this project, there will be up to 3,000 indirect beneficiaries
