Global Day of Parents

Celebrating all parents throughout the world.

In Cambodia, many families depend on their children to supplement their income. Coupled with an inadequate system of support and inconsistent attendance, children face many challenges that contribute to falling behind and dropping out. Education is a fundamental investment for a better future, but unfortunately, is still a major barrier in alleviating poverty.

Approximately 20% of Cambodia’s youth will finish upper secondary school (UNICEF, 2019). However, with educational resources and a system of support, our mission is to increase the graduation rate. Today, in celebration of the UN’s Global Day of Parents, we would like to thank and acknowledge all of the parents who have supported and sacrificed for their children’s education and future.

Sharing stories of support and encouragement

17-year old Rotana* and 12-year old Kanha* attribute enrolling in ISF’s education programme to their parents’ persistence and guidance.

Rotana’s mother runs a small business selling cakes and beverages in front of ISF’s Learning Center. Even though she depends on Rotana’s help setting up and running the business, she understands the importance of education. After connecting with a social worker, she helped Rotana enrol in ISF’s Catch-up Programme and she ensures her daughter prioritises her classes and lessons. Rotana shares that prior to ISF, she received bad grades. With her mother’s support, she has started excelling in her classes.

Kanha’s family struggles financially, but her parents Chhorm and Sokhon, are committed to ensuring she has a better life. To them, “parent” is a big word that comes with responsibility and sacrifice. Regardless of their financial situation, they believe parents should always do what’s best for their children, and although they are overworked and tired, they dedicate time to sit down and help Kanha through her lessons. Their hope is that, through education, Kanha is able to lift herself from poverty.

Education has the power to alleviate poverty and at-home support is fundamental to success in the classroom. Thank you to all of the parents who have dedicated their lives to supporting and caring for their children’s future.
