Chan* joined ISF’s Education Programme at the age of 10 in grade 1. Currently a state school student in grade 9, he wishes to finish his education but earlier this year seemed doubtful as he was struggling with the cost of daily living expenses. Chan’s parents died when he was just a baby and he was raised by his neighbours but now at the age of 16 he must take care of himself.

Trying to find a balance between earning a living and receiving an education in Cambodia is challenging but Chan believed ISF’s Employment Project might be able to help him. He happened to join the project at the same time ISF was recruiting was for a librarian assistant and was offered a part time job upon joining.

His new work schedule is tailored around his school schedule and he has been able to make both work very well.  “Through this opportunity I can get income to support myself and my studies while also learning a lot by working in a library and being surrounded by books” he explains.

Chan is loving his new role as he enjoys reading books and also wants to work with children from the disadvantaged areas and families like his own when he’s older. The position of library assistant is a step in the right direction for him and he wishes to continue until he graduates high school.
